The French football international Benjamin Mendy has to remain in custody. A court in English Chester refused on Wednesday a request to dismiss the 27-year-old against deposit in the run-up to a process. Mendy himself did not participate in the hearing, another is scheduled for the 10th of September.

Mendy, which has been detained in Liverpool since Friday, will be charged rapidly in four cases and another sexual assault. The incidents should have taken place between October 2020 and August 2021, one of the victims was minor.

Already in the past week, Mendy had been suspended by his Club Manchester City. The matter is the subject of a court procedure, and the club can therefore not give any further opinions until this procedure is completed, said City.
