Nona Gaprindashvili , world champion of chess, is presenting a lawsuit against netflix , this after during the end of the series Gambit of Ladies , a sexist comment was made by referring to she. According to Gaprindashvili, said comment is not right at all.
Gambito de lady tells the story of Beth Harmon, (Anya Tarloy-Joy) , a young chessist who ends up becoming the best player in the world. Despite being a fictitious story, history covers certain issues that did occur in reality, as the fact that at some point in history, the competitive chess scene was dominated by men.
Well, Gaprindashvili does not agree by the way it Netflix portrayed it within the series. In particular, the comment that caused the lawsuit occurred during the final chapter, where one of the characters says the following:
The only unusual thing in it, in reality, is the sex of it. And even that is not unique in Russia. There is Nona Gaprindashvili, but she is the Women s World Champion and has never faced men.
Well, the reality is that GAPRAndashvili had previously faced men in chess, specifically 59, and at least 10 of them were considered as great teachers within the discipline. In the complaint you can read the following:
Netflix slowly and deliberately lied up the achievements of Gaprindashvili with the cheap and cynical purpose of enhancing the drama by making it seem that her fiction hero had managed to do what no other woman, including Gaprindashvili, had done.
Adding an additional insult to the wound, Netflix described Gaprindashvili as Russian, despite knowing that it was Georgian and that the Georgians had suffered under Russian domination when they were part of the Soviet Union and, thereafter, had been intimidated and invaded by Russia.
GAPRAndashvili requires that $ 5 million be paid in real damages and others for punitive damage. This demand was already formalized in the state of California, and Netflix has already pronounced itself:
Netflix only has the greatest respect for Ms. Gaprindashvili and the illustrious career of her, but we believe that this affirmation has no merit and we will defend the case energetically.
For the moment, this case is still in a preliminary stage, so it will be interesting to know how it will be advancing with the passage of time.
